Why this matters

A new obligation is flowing
through Irish supply chains.

The EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires large companies to report on their environmental and social impacts, including those within their supply chain. That obligation does not stop at the company's front door.

It flows downstream to their suppliers and partners, which means Irish SMEs are now receiving formal sustainability data requests from clients they cannot afford to lose. Most have never had to think about this before.

The VSME standard was designed specifically to give smaller businesses a proportionate, structured way to respond to these requests accurately and credibly, without the overhead of a full corporate reporting exercise.

What is the VSME?

The Voluntary SME sustainability disclosure standard provides a clear framework for SMEs to report on their environmental, social and governance impacts.

It covers greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, workforce practices, and business conduct across 11 disclosure topics in the Basic Module.

It is the standard your clients are most likely to reference when they ask you for sustainability data.
